Gaston Sebire

Gaston Sebire was born in Saint-Samson, a small French village near the Normandy coast in Calvados. By virtue of his upbringing, Sebire was attracted to seascapes, but he also excelled in landscapes and still life.

Sebire studied art in Rouen and is considered a second generation of the famed L’Ecole de Rouen Artists. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the L’Ecole de Rouen Artists was known as a group of independent post-Impressionists who were particularly focused on capturing nature, en plein air. They were fiercely independent, and notably, rejected the prevailing art movements of their day such as Fauvism and Cubism.

Throughout his life, Sebire was an active exhibitor and won numerous awards including the gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Francais. As a testament to his artistic contributions, in 1975 Sebire was made Chevalier dans l’Ordre National du Merite, one of France’s highest honors.
