Biography:
March Avery is the daughter of one of America’s most important abstract painters, Milton Avery and Sally Michel Avery, and a fine painter in her own right. March never received formal art training, but seems to have gained a thorough education by osmosis. The Avery home was filled with art and artist friends such as Mark Rothko, Marsden Hartley and Barnett Newman.
March’s style, like her mother’s, is a reflection of Milton’s. Flattened forms lacking nearly all detail are brought to life through a sophisticated and lively palette. March’s figurative work differentiates from her father’s through her intimate directness and use of everyday subject matter. Landscape subjects are where we see a closer resemblance to her father’s work. The dialog between the painters, whether direct or not, is certain.
March Avery is a graduate of Barnard College, New York. She maintains a studio in New York City. She continues to exhibit nationally and her works are held in numerous public and private collections.
