Biography:

Roger Dennis was seen as a bridge between the renowned American Impressionist art colony at Old Lyme and the late twentieth century. Born in New London, Connecticut in 1902, he lived near Old Lyme for most of his life, dying in Niantic in 1996. He studied at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston and at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Closer to home, Dennis studied with James McManus at the Art League, Hartford, CT in the early 1930s and under Guy Wiggins, Frank Bicknell, and George Bruestle in Old Lyme. He exhibited annually at the Old Lyme Art Association from 1940 on. He also exhibited at the Connecticut Academy, Copley Society, Boston, and with the Shippee Gallery, New York throughout the 1980s.

Biographer and former dealer, Patricia Shippee notes that Dennis is known for his “innovative pastels.” He was the chief conservator at the Lyman Allyn Museum of Art in New London, and he taught art at Connecticut College.
