Biography:

Florence Baran Wise was born in Farmingdale, NY and died in Providence, RI. She was known for her portraits, still life and illustrations although her landscape work was also very accomplished.

Wise was a student of George Bridgman, a classically trained artist who studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris with Gustave Boulanger. Bridgman was a long-time teacher at the Art Student’s League and among his many students were Emile Gruppe and Norman Rockwell.

Learning anatomy, both form and movement, from Bridgman helped Wise to excel in all areas of her work. She also studied at the National Academy of Design and Rhode Island School of Design.
