Harold Christopher Davies

1891-1976
American
Biography:

Born in Seattle, WA, Harold Christopher Davies’ family soon moved to Virginia. At the age of 14, Davies began studying art at the Corcoran in Washington, DC and furthered his studies at the San Francisco Institute of Art upon relocation to California.

Davies began a career in business causing him to relocate to Huntsville, Alabama (1945-57) and then Long Island, NY until 1969 before retiring to California where he kept a studio on Tomales Bay in Inverness. Painting all the while, Davies was finally able to devote his later years exclusively to painting. An Abstract Expressionist, Davies drew inspiration from his friends Gottlieb, Kline, and DeKooning. I offer evidence of Davies’s place among the first-tier artists of the day; of the six artists selected for the 1966 Invitational Exhibition of the Parrish Museum were Davies, Lee Krasner, and Larry Rivers.

Harold Christopher Davies’ papers can be found at the Archives of American Art.
